Horwath releases open letter on paid sick days

NDP to seek unanimous consent to pass bill when legislature resumes

HAMILTON — Official Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath released an open letter today advising of the NDP’s intent to seek unanimous consent to pass NDP MPP Peggy Sattler’s bill to give Ontarians paid sick days as soon as the legislature resumes.

Dear Mr. Del Duca,

As New Democrats, we believe all Ontarians should have access to paid sick leave. You will know that we tried to push your government for real and meaningful action in this area and were disappointed that the action was too little and too late. We have been pushing this current government from day one for meaningful and effective sick day provisions.

You will know that on December 8 2020, NDP MPP Peggy Sattler tabled Bill 239, the Stay Home If You Are Sick Act, which lays out exactly how we can ensure that any Ontarian who has fallen ill can stay home without the fear of lost wages.

We plan to seek unanimous consent for passage of this Bill when the House resumes. I trust we can count on your party’s support as a true and meaningful demonstration of working together to help working people during this pandemic and to ensure paid sick days for all Ontarians.

Best,

(Original signed)

Andrea Horwath
Leader of the Official Opposition
MPP for Hamilton Centre
